Traumatic Brain Injuries
Awareness surrounding mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI), otherwise known as concussions, is steadily increasing. As we are all acutely aware, these injuries have an immediate impact on the brain and its function. Unfortunately, mTBI is becoming more recognized for creating long term effects, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy as seen in as many as 96% of retired NFL players that donated their brains for study following their deaths. While awareness has exploded in sports, these injuries are often overlooked in car accidents, falls and within the military and the exposure to road side bombs causing the head to jerk violently.
Naturopathic Medicine is founded on 6 principles, one of which is Prevention. Unfortunately, mTBI is impossible to completely prevent, however there are ways that Naturopathic Medicine can help!
Dr. Spletzer is in the process of writing a comprehensive book on mTBI and the subsequent effects it has on the brain. It explores the use of medications, supplements and dietary nutrition as a means to prevent the severity of damage, as well as help expedite recovery. For example, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), is a very common side effect of mTBI and can be the root cause of SIBO.
